Norval morrisseau
On this Indigenous People’s Day, hear from one of the greatest self-taught artists Copper Thunderbird, also known as Norval Morrisseau.
Morrisseau teaches as he stands in front of the masterpiece mural, “A Separate Reality” which was in process in 1981. It took him five years to complete it. He then gifted it to the people of Canada. It now is permanently displayed in the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, Canada.
According to Ojibwa tradition the sacred symbols that Morrisseau uses in his paintings are themselves charged with sacred energy. Supposedly anyone using these symbols for non religious ceremonies would be doomed…
