It’s the first Friday of the month, and there’s two things you should be doing — going to Mainframe Studio’s first Friday event, and listening to the third episode of my new podcast, “FolkArtwork and Friends”.
I am extremely thrilled to be joined by Isa Segalovich on the latest episode of “FolkArtwork and Friends”. When I started this podcast, Isa was the one person I wanted to seek out for their advice, and she was more than willing to join me for this conversation. I just had to wait until she returned from Romania so I could hear all about the Merry Cemetery!
On the third episode, Isa (my former art history teacher and an anti-authoritarian folk art historian) delighted me with stories about her travels to Romania, some of her favorite art environments in the midwest, why she ditched pre-med in college and started thinking about how art could be used for good among many, many more things — including her new book coming out in 2026, “Ornament Now”.
Plus a glimpse into the humor and symbolism of the over 800 crosses that adorn the most beautiful cemetery in the world, the Merry Cemetery, located in Săpânța, Romania.
Normally, I dive into the life and work of an artist no longer with us. This month, I’m thrilled for part two of this podcast to feature my conversation with the one and only, pipe-cleaner artist extraordinare Montrel Beverly.
This summer, Montrel was generous enough to create a few pieces of art for the show I curated at SAGE Studio & Gallery, and he continues to push the boundaries of what seems possible with art made from pipe cleaners. We talk about the first pipe-cleaner sculpture he ever made, a pipe-cleaner prank he pulled in high school, and his plans for a pipe-cleaner world record.
Watch the latest epsiodes of “FolkArtwork and Friends” here.
Episodes will come out every first Friday of the month, on your favorite podcasts player — Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and with video on YouTube. Like, subscribe, share and keep coming back for more. Thanks so much!
Love you.
