FolkArtwork Collective Pop Up Exhibit at The Dust Collective in Des Moines

The FolkArtwork Collective is pleased to announce a one-day-only celebration of outsider art, a first-time author, and vintage clothing.

Join us at The Dust Collective on Saturday, April 26th, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. There will be a handful of items that didn’t find homes at the 2025 Outsider Art Fair that could make its way home with you! Not only will some of my favorite outsider artists from around the globe have artwork available for purchase, but I’m thrilled to have Sean Moeller, founder of Daytrotter and owner of Racoon Motel in Davenport, Iowa, join us for a special reading of his debut book “PLAIN CLOTHES HAMBURGLAR“.

It’s Drake Relays weekend, so why not get two Bettendorf track greats (okay maybe just one) who used to run circles around Drake Stadium, but now spend their time helping emerging artists — musicians and visual artists alike — share their creative and magical joy with the world.

Not only will you have the chance to hear from Moeller and shop great artwork, but you will be sure to enjoy the incredible curated collection of vintage clothing from one of the best vintage clothing stores in the Midwest — The Dust Collective, owned and operated by Garrett Cornelison, who just celebrated its one-year anniversary in the East Village. And if you don’t believe me how great it is, peep this beauty of a sweatshirt I purchased there a few weeks ago! (I don’t even go to Grand View!!!)

And if that’s not enough for you, there will be a raffle for some of FolkArtwork’s Oaxcan wood-carved folk art animals, with proceeds going to a local charity helping immigrants fight the oppression coming from this current administration. There will also be treats, coffee, and sparkling water, and in my opinion — you can’t have an art exhibit without a coloring table for the kids.

Please join us at The Dust Collective (509 E 5th St, Des Moines, IA 50309) on Saturday, April 26th from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

“In PLAIN CLOTHES HAMBURGLAR, Sean Moeller captures the moment of when an epiphany exists just on the other side of consciousness. The kind of daydream that shows up when our defenses are down, revealing a deeper truth that gives our language new meaning.”

Taylor Goldsmith, lead singer of Dawes

Artists included in the exhibit include:

SARAH LEE

SARAH LEE is a self-taught Irish artist and illustrator working in London. Working full-time as a nurse and at a charity that runs workshops for people with mental health conditions. When she isn’t working or spending time with her daughter, Sarah paints every chance she gets.

ESTEBAN WHITESIDE

ESTEBAN WHITESIDE is a self-taught painter whose work is based on the intersectionality of street art and politics. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, he began painting as an act of love. This then led to him dedicating more time and research into painting, with an interest in abstraction.

JAMES ASH

JAMES ASH has always wanted to be an art teacher. For various reasons, including addiction, his mental health, and living without internet in the Michigan woods, he never became an art teacher. So, he taught himself how to make art.

In 2021, James Ash passed away at the age of seventy-one. His daughter, Anna, had the task of cleaning out his cabin and deciding what to do with the two dozen large, colorful, surreal, and enigmatic paintings.

RENEESHA MCCOY

RENEESHA MCCOY is a self-taught artist who began her artistic practice in 2019, living and working in North Carolina. Working primarily in acrylics and oil pastels, she often explores various mediums like colored pencil, ink, and paint markers.

JACKIE BRADSHAW

JACKIE BRADSHAW is a neurodivergent, endometriosis warrior folk/outsider artist from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. She spent years working as a PSW until the birth of her son prompted her to start a small home daycare.

During this time, she utilized leftover paints from the kids to create mirror image paintings. She added ink or crayon to extract images from the splatters of paint that she perceived. Becoming deeply engrossed in this process she produced hundreds of paintings. Jackie has continued creating art as a means to quiet her mind and body.

MIKE COMBS

MIKE COMBS is a self-taught artist from Austin, Texas who for the past decade has been creating “Creeps” on upcycled husk corn crates using spray paint, house paint, and acrylic paint. You can find his “Creeps” on the walls of private collections across the country, as well as Austin galleries and streets.

GABRIELLE K BROWN

GABRIELLE K BROWN is a multifaceted artist, eagerly seeking new ways to tell stories through paintings, sculptures and public murals. Her work retains an object like quality utilizing many folk art materials. From wood and various paints, they retain a natural and intuitive, seemingly naive yet extremely complex aesthetic.

JORDAN SULLIVAN

JORDAN SULLIVAN is a self-taught artist born in Houston, Texas, and raised in rural Ohio and suburban Detroit. In addition to making art, he has worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at rehabs for adolescents and adults. He lives in Queens, New York.

DINAH HANSON-CARRILLO

DINAH HANSON-CARRILLO is a Los Angeles born and raised musician turned artist. She mostly paints from memory or imagination but will often use the faces of musicians and actors to complete a piece. Her other influences are tarot cards, alternate universes, the surreality of Whittier, the idea of many lives living under the same sky, and dreams.

NOEL HATFIELD

NOEL HATFIELD is a self-taught artist from Winterest, Iowa. Working in oil paint on stretched canvas or dibond aluminum, Noel paints in several styles, including Abstract, Expressionist, and Impasto with knife and brush. When he is not painting, Noel is fixing up his house or taking care of his grandchildren.

MELODY JEAN MOULTON

MELODY JEAN MOULTON is a self-taught artist from California, raised in Humboldt County, but calling San Diego home since 2002. All of her paper collage work is cut by hand and is largely intuition-based. Letting go of expectations and going with her gut has proven to be her most potent path of creating.

CHRISTOPHER BAME

CHRISTOPHER BAME was born on June 1, 1955 in Burlington, Vermont. He was premature at birth and diagnosed completely deaf. In his early childhood he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, OCD, and having developmental delays. Bame spent the majority of his childhood in an institutional setting.

He started using art at a young age as a way to communicate with his peers, convey his needs, and tell stories about his day. His narrative paintings and drawings often capture autobiographical storytelling through whimsy and vulnerability.
